One of my favorite things that we get to learn about throughout the school year are the seasons of our church calendar. Since the start of this school year, we have learned about the season of Ordinary Time, a time to see God's presence in the ordinary, mundane things in our day. Those months have led up to the season of Advent, a time of preparation to celebrate the birth of Christ and his second coming. Celebrating Advent at CDS is something I look forward to each year.
This advent, we are so excited to use an e-book called "Slow and Sacred Advent." Each week has a theme, and with that theme, we will read bible stories, sing carols, have a responsive reading, and make handcrafts (there is even copywork that goes along with that week's theme).
The themes are:
Week 1: Jesus the Seed
Week 2: Jesus the Star
Week 3: Jesus the Scepter
Week 4: Jesus the Savior
I will post each week with pictures from our school days, but I will also include recipes and other activities you can do at home that go along with our theme.
Our Tuesday mornings will be a bit different in that we'll have chapel in the church sanctuary. We will light a candle each week on our Advent wreath, sing Christmas hymns, and hear stories and scripture that point us to the Light of the World.
If you're looking for an Advent book to do with your family at home, there is still time! Here is a list of some of my favorites:
- Unwrapping the Greatest Gift by Ann Voskamp
- Jesus Storybook Bible Advent Plan
- The Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean
In my next post, I'll share some other special days on the church calendar that we celebrate in Advent as well. I'll also talk about the importance and beauty of celebrating these days together.
Happy Advent Season to you all!
