It's hard to believe, but today was the first day of school. This is the third year I have run this sweet little school, and each year has been better than the last. This year the class is all girls - 5, to be exact. And I have a feeling it's going to be a girlie year, which I'm all for. I'm even starting a new tradition in honor of that, with tea time on Tuesdays - teacups and all.
I love the beginning of the year. New crayons, freshly sharpened pencils, clean and unused notebooks...new school supplies is one of life's greatest pleasures in my opinion. And along with the new supplies, I also re-vamped our classroom a bit.
Every summer I like to go down there (it's in the basement) and add/subtract from the room. I think most teachers do that - the room becomes a giant mess, but slowly things get put back or put in a new place, and then it all comes together. I love that feeling. Yesterday I had a time where the families could come and check out the classroom (I've got some new students this year) and drop off their supplies. Since it was so clean, I thought I'd take some pictures to remember that it can be this organized and clean. (Just click on the horizontal pics to make them a bit bigger.)
Taking a look around the room, I think I've come to realize two things: I have a slight obsession with baskets, and I need to stop slow down on buying books.
I find most of my baskets at Family Dollar or Dollar General - they've got them in pretty much every size and I'm not sure what I would do without them!
I've tried to add special touches to the room, with butterflies scattered around the room. And I've tried to make the place as cozy as I can, which can be tricky in a basement.
The curtains behind the chairs (that surround/hide the laundry area) are new this year, and came from an idea from my friend, Brooke. They are actually drop cloths that you get at Lowe's or Home Depot. The ones that I got are huge and very cheap. And I love the light brown color. Brooke used them in her bedroom and they are gorgeous. Who knew?

So there ya have it. New supplies, new classmates, new traditions, and a new school year. Bring it on!
